This year has seen international travel take a hit after the coronavirus pandemic saw holidaymakers forced to put their plans on hold. Last week, positive news following the success of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine trial gave the travel sector a welcome boost. Following the news of a potential coronavirus vaccine, online travel shopping company Expedia saw a shift in booking habits.

The best rates for accommodation are typically found on a Monday.

But holiday hunters should avoid booking on a Thursday.

Thursdays are usually the day when fellow holiday hunters are looking for a weekend break and when the UK’s travel corridor review is announced, which prompts a surge in interest.

Those looking to rent a car, however, should book on a Thursday when it’s cheapest with Tuesdays having the most expensive rates.

This summer saw a surge in staycation popularity as Britons ditched holidays abroad for something closer to home.

With staycations on the up, 2020 seaside towns in the UK were inundated with tourists.

The destinations that saw the most growth in 2020 in the UK were Brighton, Inverness, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, East Anglia, Bournemouth, the Lake District and Cumbria, Bath and the Scottish islands.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding travel, Britons are now looking to book those once in a lifetime holidays after a year of travel restrictions.

Expedia has seen a surge in new destinations for 2021 that weren’t on most Britons’ radars last year.

The Maldives, French Polynesia, Barbados, Mexico, Koh Samui, Mauritius, the Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia and South Africa are all trending destinations for 2021.
